TPI golf physiotherapy movement screen at The Physio Rooms

The short answer

What this treatment is

TPI golf physiotherapy at The Physio Rooms is delivered by Amanda using the Titleist Performance Institute movement-screen framework. Rather than coaching your technique, it assesses the physical foundations beneath your swing — hip and thoracic mobility, rotational control, balance, and core stability — to find the limitations that force compensations. A restricted hip turn or stiff mid-back often shows up as swing faults, lost club-head speed, and recurring low-back, elbow, or shoulder pain. We translate the screen into a clear, individualised exercise plan, and we work alongside your golf coach where helpful. Available at our Liverpool Street clinic (280 Bishopsgate, inside UNTIL) and at Wickham Bishops in Essex.

Areas treated

What's included

  • Physiotherapist-led TPI movement screen that links physical limitations to specific swing faults
  • Targets the foundations of club-head speed, distance, and shot-to-shot consistency
  • Reduces the risk of common golf injuries — low back, lead elbow, lead wrist, and shoulder
  • Individualised, golf-specific exercise plan you can progress between sessions
  • Works alongside your golf coach so technique and physical work pull in the same direction
  • Suitable for recreational players through to low-handicap and competitive golfers

Boundaries of practice

What's not treated

Good practice means saying no when indicated:

  • Acute injury or a recent flare of pain — book a standard physiotherapy assessment first and return for the golf screen once symptoms settle
  • Unstable or uncontrolled cardiac condition — medical clearance required before any exertional movement testing
  • Acute, severe, or worsening low-back, neck, or limb pain, or any red-flag symptoms — requires clinical assessment before a performance screen

Patient journey

What to expect

Consultation & preparation

Wear comfortable clothing you can rotate and move freely in. You do not need to bring clubs for the screen. Avoid playing a full round or a heavy gym session in the 24 hours beforehand so your mobility and control reflect your normal state rather than fatigue. Bring any recent scan reports, GP letters, or notes from your golf coach.

During treatment

Aftercare

You will leave with a prioritised, golf-specific exercise plan. Begin the work straight away and integrate it into your weekly routine alongside the NHS adult strength recommendation. We re-screen at follow-up to measure change and progress your programme, and liaise with your golf coach where it helps align technical and physical work.

Common
questions

Is TPI golf physiotherapy the same as a golf lesson?

No. A golf lesson coaches your technique; a TPI screen assesses your body. Amanda is a physiotherapist examining mobility, stability, and control to find physical limitations that restrict your swing. The two are complementary — we work alongside your coach so technical and physical work reinforce each other.

Will it actually help my club-head speed and distance?

It addresses the physical foundations of an efficient swing — rotation, separation, and stability. Removing limitations that force compensations can help you move more freely and load the swing better. We assess your body and prescribe exercise; we do not promise specific yardage gains, which also depend on technique and conditioning.

I get back pain when I play golf — can this help?

Often, yes. Low-back pain is among the most common golf complaints and is frequently linked to limited hip and mid-back rotation forcing the lower back to compensate. The screen identifies these patterns and the plan targets them. If pain is acute or severe, book a standard physiotherapy assessment first.

Do I need to be a good golfer to benefit?

No. The screen is calibrated to you, from recreational players to low-handicap and competitive golfers. Recreational players often gain the most, as physical limitations and recurring niggles tend to be more pronounced. What matters is that you play regularly and want to move better and reduce injury risk.

What should I bring or wear?

Wear comfortable clothing you can move and rotate freely in, similar to what you would train in. You do not need clubs for the screen itself. If you have recent scan reports, GP letters, or notes from a coach about your swing, bring those along to inform the assessment.
