Post-Operative Rehabilitation — Physiotherapy in London & Essex

Structured rehabilitation after orthopaedic surgery — knee and hip replacement, ACL reconstruction, shoulder repair, post-fracture — coordinated with your surgeon's protocol. At our Liverpool Street, London and Wickham Bishops, Essex clinics we rebuild strength, movement and function through phased, criteria-based progression.

Post-Operative Rehabilitation

The concern

Recovery after surgery is rarely automatic. The operation addresses the structure; rehabilitation restores the function. We rehab patients after total knee and hip replacement, ACL reconstruction, meniscal and cartilage repair, rotator cuff and shoulder stabilisation surgery, and post-fracture fixation. Where your surgeon supplies a written protocol, we follow it and layer our own progressive loading, range-of-motion work and movement re-training on top. Progression is criteria-based — you advance when you meet measurable milestones in strength, range, swelling control and movement quality, not simply when a set number of weeks has passed. Both physiotherapists, Amanda Yardley and Michelle, are HCPC-registered and CSP-chartered, and bring a holistic view that accounts for your work, sport and daily demands. The goal is a confident, well-tested return to the life you had before surgery.

What drives it

  • Joint replacement surgery — total knee or hip replacement, most often following osteoarthritis
  • Ligament reconstruction — ACL, MCL or lateral ankle reconstruction after an acute injury
  • Tendon repair — rotator cuff, Achilles or distal biceps repair
  • Cartilage and meniscal procedures — repair, debridement or transplant
  • Fracture fixation surgery requiring graded return to weight-bearing and movement
  • Shoulder stabilisation after dislocation or recurrent instability

Common
questions

When should I start physiotherapy after surgery?

Most surgeons want rehabilitation to begin within the first one to two weeks after surgery, sometimes sooner for joint replacement or ACL reconstruction. The exact timing comes from your surgeon's protocol, so bring it to your first appointment. Starting at the right time is one of the strongest single predictors of a good long-term outcome.

Do you work with my surgeon's protocol?

Yes. Where your surgeon supplies a written rehab protocol or wants direct contact, we follow it and coordinate accordingly. If no protocol is provided, we proceed using current best-practice guidance for your specific procedure and adapt to the operative notes you bring to your first session.

How long does post-operative rehabilitation take?

It depends entirely on the surgery. Hip and knee replacement rehab commonly runs over several months toward full function, while ACL reconstruction with return to pivoting sport typically takes nine to twelve months with structured testing. We give you an honest, individual projection at your first appointment based on your procedure and starting point.

What does criteria-based progression mean?

Rather than advancing purely by the calendar, you progress to each new phase once you meet measurable milestones — controlled swelling, restored range of motion, adequate strength and good movement quality. This protects the healing repair, reduces re-injury risk and ensures every step forward is earned and tested rather than assumed.
