The short answer

What this treatment is

Clinical Pilates is exercise-based rehabilitation led by Pilates by Janie, working alongside our physiotherapists Amanda Yardley and Michelle. Unlike a general studio class, sessions are informed by your clinical assessment and tailored to how your body actually moves and loads. We focus on deep core control, spinal and pelvic stability, posture, flexibility, and balance — the same active-rehabilitation principles NICE and the NHS recommend for managing low back pain and staying active. It is the natural next step once acute symptoms settle: a structured way to rebuild capacity, prevent recurrence, and keep moving well at work, in sport, and in everyday life.

Areas treated

What's included

  • Physiotherapy-informed programming — exercises chosen from your clinical assessment, not a one-size-fits-all studio routine
  • Builds deep core strength, spinal and pelvic stability, posture, flexibility, and balance
  • Bridges hands-on rehabilitation and long-term conditioning so progress is maintained, not lost
  • Active-rehabilitation approach aligned with NICE and NHS guidance for back pain and general fitness
  • Delivered by Pilates by Janie alongside HCPC-registered, CSP-chartered physiotherapists
  • Available at both clinics — Liverpool Street (inside UNTIL) and Wickham Bishops, Essex

Boundaries of practice

What's not treated

Good practice means saying no when indicated:

  • Acute injury or symptom flare-up — settle the acute phase with physiotherapy before starting Pilates
  • Certain stages of pregnancy or pregnancy-related complications — seek GP or midwife clearance first
  • Uncontrolled cardiac conditions or unstable cardiovascular disease — obtain GP clearance before exercise
  • Recent surgery without surgeon or physiotherapist clearance to begin loaded exercise
  • New, undiagnosed, or rapidly worsening pain — have it assessed before exercising

Patient journey

What to expect

Consultation & preparation

Wear comfortable clothing you can move freely in — leggings or shorts and a fitted top work well. Bring grip socks if you have them. If you are continuing from physiotherapy, no separate paperwork is needed; new clients complete a brief intake before their first session. Tell us about any current injury, recent surgery, pregnancy, or medical condition when you book.

During treatment

Aftercare

You will leave each session knowing what to practise between visits, often with a short home programme to reinforce control and build consistency. Progress is reviewed regularly and exercises are adjusted as you improve. If symptoms flare or something feels wrong, we can refer you back to physiotherapy for a hands-on assessment before continuing.

Common
questions

How is clinical Pilates different from a regular Pilates class?

Clinical Pilates is physiotherapy-informed and individualised. Janie works from your clinical assessment and tailors every exercise to your diagnosis, movement patterns, and goals. A general studio class follows a set routine for a mixed group. For people recovering from injury, surgery, or long-standing pain, the clinical approach is safer and more targeted.

Do I need a physiotherapy assessment before starting clinical Pilates?

Not always. If you are continuing from physiotherapy at our clinics, Janie works directly from your physio's findings. New clients begin with a movement screen so the programme suits your body. If you have a recent injury, surgery, or undiagnosed pain, we may recommend a physiotherapy assessment first to ensure Pilates is appropriate.

Can clinical Pilates help with back pain?

Yes. Active rehabilitation, including Pilates-based exercise, is part of the management NICE and the NHS recommend for low back pain — staying active and building core strength rather than resting. Clinical Pilates rebuilds spinal stability and movement control. It is best started once acute symptoms have settled, and your physiotherapist can advise on timing.

Is clinical Pilates suitable during pregnancy?

In many cases, yes, but it depends on the stage of pregnancy and your individual circumstances. Some stages and conditions require adapted exercises or GP clearance first. Tell us you are pregnant when booking so Janie can assess suitability, adapt the programme appropriately, and work safely alongside your maternity care team.

Where are clinical Pilates sessions held?

At both of our clinics. Our London site is at 280 Bishopsgate, EC2M 4RB — inside UNTIL Liverpool Street — and our Essex site is at 7 Wooldridge Place, Wickham Bishops, CM8 3LW. Sessions are booked online through Cliniko, with no GP referral needed. Mention any current injury or condition when you book.
