Exercise rehabilitation in the gym at The Physio Rooms

The short answer

What this treatment is

Exercise rehabilitation is the active core of recovery. Where manual therapy and acupuncture ease symptoms, graded loading is what actually restores capacity — and NICE guidance recommends progressive exercise as a first-line treatment for low back pain, sciatica, and osteoarthritis. We assess your movement, strength, and the demands of your work, sport, and daily life, then build a programme that progresses with you: mobility first, then controlled strength, stability, and a graded return to the activities that matter. Both clinics have full gym facilities, and where attending in person is difficult we deliver the same evidence-based programme as home-based rehabilitation, supported and progressed remotely.

Areas treated

What's included

  • HCPC-registered, CSP-chartered physiotherapists designing and progressing every programme — the regulated UK clinical standard
  • Progressive loading aligned with NICE guidance for low back pain, sciatica, and osteoarthritis
  • Full gym facilities at both the Liverpool Street and Wickham Bishops clinics
  • Home-based rehabilitation option for patients who find regular clinic attendance difficult
  • Programmes built around your real work, sport, and lifestyle demands — not generic exercise sheets

Boundaries of practice

What's not treated

Good practice means saying no when indicated:

  • Acute, unstable fracture or dislocation before medical clearance to load the area
  • Loading beyond limits set by your surgeon's post-operative protocol
  • Suspected cauda equina syndrome (loss of bladder/bowel control with back pain) — go to A&E
  • Suspected DVT in a limb — requires GP or hospital review before exercise
  • Severe uncontrolled hypertension or cardiovascular instability without medical clearance

Patient journey

What to expect

Consultation & preparation

Wear comfortable clothing and trainers you can move and exercise in. Bring any scan reports, surgical protocols, or GP letters, and a note of your main goals. For home-based rehabilitation, have a clear space and any equipment you already own to hand during your assessment.

During treatment

Aftercare

You will leave with a tailored exercise programme, recordings or instructions for each movement, and clear guidance on how often to train. Some muscle soreness in the first 24–48 hours is normal. We schedule a reassessment to review your progress and progress your loading at the next visit.

Common
questions

What is exercise rehabilitation and how does it differ from going to the gym?

Exercise rehabilitation is a structured, individually prescribed programme designed by a physiotherapist to restore strength, mobility, and function after injury, surgery, or pain. Unlike general training, every exercise is chosen for your diagnosis, stage of recovery, and goals, then progressed safely as your tissues adapt and your capacity returns.

Do I need a GP referral to start exercise rehabilitation?

No. UK physiotherapists are first-contact practitioners, so you can self-refer and book directly through our Cliniko online booking — no GP referral is needed. If you are claiming through private health insurance, your insurer may ask for a referral, so check your policy before your first appointment.

Can I do my rehabilitation at home instead of at the clinic?

Yes. Where regular clinic attendance is difficult, we deliver the same evidence-based programme as home-based rehabilitation. You are taught each exercise, given clear instructions and recordings, and reviewed remotely so your programme is progressed safely. Many patients combine occasional clinic visits with a home-led routine between them.

How long will it take to recover with exercise rehabilitation?

It depends on the condition and how it responds to loading. Acute injuries often improve over several weeks, while post-surgical or long-standing problems may need a few months of progressive work. Tissue adaptation takes time; we set realistic timelines at your assessment and reassess progress at every review.

Is exercise rehabilitation safe after surgery?

Yes, when guided by a physiotherapist who respects your surgeon's protocol. We start within the loading limits set after your operation and progress strength, mobility, and stability in stages as healing allows. This staged approach follows NICE guidance and protects the repair while rebuilding the capacity you need to return to normal activity.
